As we mark the opening of the Love HK Your Way! campaign, we are reminded of the proverbial story of a gas station attendant who encounters two men with their families as they move into the town. The first man stops for gas and asks the attendant what the people in the town are like. “First,” says the attendant, “tell me about the town where you lived before coming here.”
“Oh,” says the man, “it was the most horrible place. The people were unfriendly and unkind. We couldn’t wait to leave.”
“I’m afraid this town is just the same,” the attendant tells the man as he gets in his car to drive to his new home.
Some time later, another man moving into town stops at the gas station. Again, the attendant is asked what the people in the town are like. As he did with the first man, he asks about this man’s former home. “Oh, it was wonderful,” says the man. “We hated to leave. The people were friendly and kind, and we made lots of friends.”
“You are in luck,” says the attendant. “This town is just like that.”
This story demonstrates what we believe is a universal truth, that it is often our expectations and attitudes which determine the quality of our lives. Like the second man, we are convinced that we live in one of the most magnificent cities in the world. But we believe we can make Hong Kong even better as we work to serve our community and those who live here.
The Li Ka Shing Foundation was established to propel progress in our society and to help those in need—what we feel is the ultimate meaning of life. It has also been our goal to encourage charitable giving, because we believe that only one with a giving heart can truly make a difference in our world.
Love HK Your Way! is an extension of that vision, as its goal is to engage Hong Kong citizens in charitable activity and to elicit innovation and creativity as we seek to make Hong Kong a better place for all of us to live.
Through the initiatives and projects of Love HK Your Way!, the people of Hong Kong will find opportunities to come together in serving and bettering the community. We encourage you to get involved and see what you can do to help create a better Hong Kong. As we do so, together we can brighten the lives of those less fortunate, serve our community, and, like the man in the story, make Hong Kong a place we all can agree is the most wonderful city in the world.
